My Birthday Weekend

Yesterday was my birthday and H and I had a great time celebrating in Chicago (and a little bit in Woodstock). I started the day with some yoga at the Woodstock Recreation Center; I am trying to be more consistent about going to yoga. Then H and I went to the farmers market to watch a demonstration by Leslie from Expressly Leslie.

She explained what an Israeli breakfast is and how to make Jerusalem salad.

(the vegan part of the Israeli breakfast display)

She gave some good cutting tips.

Beautiful fresh veggies from the farmers market

After the demonstration, we went over to Expressly Leslie for breakfast. I had the vegan version of the Ful Plate. Delicious!

We caught the 1:48 train to Chicago. H mentioned it was my birthday when he made our hotel reservation at Trump Tower, so we got a free upgrade. Our room was huge! There was a kitchen, dining area, living room, amazing bathroom (a TV built into the mirror? not necessary but nice for watching college football while you get ready to go out) and bedroom.

H ordered an exotic fruit platter and champagne to be delivered to the room. They also brought a free birthday cake, but I could only eat the raspberry.

20110918-074058.jpgFor dinner we went to Green Zebra, a fancy vegetarian restaurant. It has a menu of small plates and recommends 3-4 plates per person. We ordered 6 in hopes of saving room for dessert. It’s hard to pick a favorite, because it was all so good, but the black bean dumplings and country flat bread would be at the top of my list.

Amuse-bouche

Chilled Somen Noodles, Hawaiian Hearts of Palm, papaya, edamame, shiso, ginger-soy

Caramelized Onion Soup, Vidalia onion, sauteed ramp bulbs, leeks, sherry

Slow Roasted Shittake Mushrooms, crispy potato, savoy cabbage

Black Bean Dumplings, chimichurri, roasted tomato puree

Roasted Eggplant, braised artichokes, olives, Romesco, toasted almonds

Country Flatbread, smoked white bean puree, tropea onion, broccoli florets, chili oil, sesame

We ordered a dessert and a “small bite” cupcake, which was actually full-sized, so we took part of it home (I finished it this morning while H ate my Trump birthday cake).

Blueberry Moelleux, lemon fondant, crystallized ginger, blueberry-banana “ice cream

Chocolate Ganache Cupcake

After dinner, we stopped at our hotel room to put away the cupcake and catch the Navy Pier fireworks from our bedroom window.  Then we went to Rebar at Trump Tower and met up with some friends for drinks (and olives, Rebar serves great olives). We snagged a table by the window overlooking the river.

Today I slept in, had coffee in the living room, and went to the gym. The cardio room has an amazing view (of course).  After checking out, we met my friend Kristin at Karyn’s on Green, who was in town from DC. I finally tried something besides the crab cake sliders.

Sweet corn soup (delicious!)

Portobello burger cheddar, tomato, red onion, spring greens, sweet BBQ sauce

Chicago Weekend

My friend from high school came to a conference in Chicago last week and stayed a few extra days in fabulous Woodstock. While it was more like winter than spring, we still had a blast.

On Friday night, we went to Duke’s Alehouse in Crystal Lake. I feel like they had fewer vegan options this time, which makes me a little sad, but the jalapeno hummus appetizer was great.

For dinner I ordered the vegan chili again (this time with French bread instead of non-vegan cornbread) and the roasted vegetable pizza.

On Saturday, I had my last longish run before the marathon. H & A met me in Crystal Lake for breakfast with the group. In the afternoon, I showed A around the beautiful city of Woodstock. We occupied ourselves for hours in the town square shops admiring vintage hats and laughing at corny trinkets.

We rushed to catch the 5:48 train to Chicago, but I still managed to juice 9 limes to make vodka gimlets for our trip down. (I’m stealing pictures from my friend; she has a really good eye).

We went to Ai Japanese for sushi when we arrived downtown. Without realizing it, I ordered two versions of the same sushi roll. The plain garden roll and a fancy one. Sadly, Ai uses egg in its tempura and cream in the kabocha corn soup. The chef hemmi veggie roll is garden maki topped with cucumber & moro-miso; mango; endive & sansho; avocado & nori paste; oshinko.

We ended the night at Rebar in Trump Tower. Good view, great cocktails, nice crowd, but watch your drink like a hawk! Servers grabbed our drinks well before we were done with them. At $18 a pop, I want to drink the entire thing, not 3/4 of it.

Thank goodness for the weekend pass; we got back on the train on Sunday afternoon and headed downtown to Karyn’s on Green.

I started with the French Onion Soup.

A had the Butternut Squash Soup, which looked and tasted amazing.

H ordered biscuits and gravy. The biscuits and “butter” were good, but the gravy left a little something to be desired.

I think I’m finally at the point where next time I go I’ll try something new, but I had to get the crab cake sliders again.

A’s Buffalo Chicken Pita looked great.

We didn’t save room for dessert, but we ordered it anyway. The chocolate terrine was amazing, but the coffee cheesecake was so gross. We picked the berries off of it, but the cake was not edible.

They use Villeroy & Boch new wave cups & saucers.

We tried to go to the top of the Sears Willis Tower, but once again, I wasn’t able to use my free tickets to the Sky Deck. When my parents came, it was closed when we wanted to go. When my sister and her husband came, it was a dark & stormy night and there would have been no view. Yesterday, there was a one and a half hour wait! It wasn’t worth missing the 6:30 train to stand in that line. We walked around town a bit, went to the lobby of the Palmer House and then caught the train back to the burbs.

I love Karyn’s on Green

Our plan was to go to Karyn’s on Green for dinner on Saturday night, but unfortunately the 3:48 train never came.  At least during the hour we waited for it.  So we switched our Saturday and Sunday plans and drove out to Schaumburg for Indian food and to stop at Ikea for baskets.   I changed our reservations to Sunday lunch.

And we tried it again.  Here’s the Woodstock train station.

The train actually came on time!

We walked from Ogilvie to Karyn’s on Green.

We drank delicious TREEtinis.  These are so refreshing and a tree is planted for each TREEtini you order.

H ordered some potato leek soup that was a good mix between a brothy and creamy soup.  I love vegan restaurants because we can share everything.  He ordered the crabcake sliders (because I have talked about them non-stop since the first time I came here) and I ordered chicken and waffles with a side of mushroom tofu bacon.  We switched plates half way through.
